Mentoring
"Each One Reach One" Mentoring Program
Welcome to IABA's (International Association of Black Actuaries) "¯Each One Reach One"¯ Mentoring Program. This program links college/high school students and professionals with seasoned actuaries and actuarial professionals who are able to share career advice from their personal experiences. IABA is strongly committed to it's "Each One Reach One" Mentoring Program. We encourage members to become active participants experiencing a rewarding and enriching relationship and growth opportunity that will benefit the mentor, mentor resource, mentee and IABA.
The roles and responsibilities of mentors, mentor resources and mentees are defined below.
MENTOR
Mentors' responsibilities include broadening a mentee's
understanding about the actuarial profession, work environment and the examination
process. In your capacity as a mentor you should focus on the following:
- Offering suggestions to improve technical skills and study techniques
- Serve as an effective tutor and exam counselor
- Help build self-confidence through constructive criticism and encouragement
- Interact with mentee on a consistent basis
- Maintain confidentiality around sensitive issues
- Serve as a positive role model
- Be committed to the mentee by keeping appointments with them
- Offer feedback in a timely manner
- Spend a total of 1 hour per month with the mentee via phone, email or face-to-face if possible
- Support the mentee through their professional and personal development

Mentor Resource
Mentor Resources' responsibilities include addressing specific
questions and issues of mentees on an as needed basis. You are a reference
guide and continual resource for mentees at all levels in the mentoring program.
Questions to the mentor resource are generally addressed within a 48-hour
timeframe. This is not a formal long-standing relationship.
Even though the mentor resource only responds to immediate mentee needs,
you may still be expected to address issues a mentor would address and may
perform similar responsibilities. The mentor resource and mentee may only
have a need to interact one time as the concerns of the mentee are satisfied.
A mentee may come back to you (the mentor resource) on an as needed basis
but not often or consistently. If a mentee is in constant need of the mentor
resource, they should be referred to a mentor. As Mentor Resource
you:
- Offer suggestions to improve technical skills and study techniques
- Address any career or exam issues the mentee may have
- Maintain confidentiality around sensitive issues
- Contact the mentee within a 48-hour period via phone or email

MENTEE
Mentees' responsibilities include seeking a broader understanding
about the actuarial profession, being proactive and utilizing available resources.
The mentee maintains a respectful consideration of the mentor/mentor-resources
time by being prompt and available for meetings. As a mentee, you should
be proactive in interacting with their mentor or mentor resource. They should
also use the mentor as both a resource for knowledge and a sounding board
for ideas and issues. Follow through on recommendations especially if they
have solicited the mentor/mentor resource for specific advice.
As they seek to gain information about the profession they should focus on
four key issues:
- Areas of practice in the actuarial field
- Examination process
- General day-to-day work activities
- Professional and personal development
