Election Slate & Bios for 2020 Elections - Paid Members of IABA from the following membership levels: full active, full retired, associate and actuarial student are eligible to vote in elections. 

 

President/Director - Tenesia McGruder, FSA, MAAA

Tenesia is an Actuary at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama. She has had several roles prior to joining Blue Cross including Actuarial Consultant at Optum, Actuarial Analyst at Anthem, and Pension Consultant at Towers Watson. Tenesia graduated from the Georgia State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Actuarial Science and she received her Fellowship designation in 2014. Tenesia has served as Foundation President, Atlanta Affiliate Leader, Student Liaison, Scholarship Chair, and on the Annual Meeting Planning Committee of the International Association of Black Actuaries. She is an avid traveler and has been to all seven continents.
 

  

  

Vice President/Director - Dwayne Husbands, FSA, CFA, MAAA

Dwayne is a Senior Manager in EY’s Insurance and Actuarial Advisory Services practice.  He is based in the firm’s New York Office.  Dwayne has over 10 years of experience with EY serving insurance, reinsurance, and financial services clients.  His skill set includes risk management, forecasting & stress testing, financial reporting, ALM, and Actuarial Transformation, merger & acquisitions and MCEV.  Dwayne is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA), Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). and member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA).
Dwayne has also been involved in IABA since 2014, assisting in efforts to develop an Actuarial Ambassador Program (AAP) to promote the actuarial profession and foster the development of black actuarial students on college campuses.  Dwayne has since established and instituted an AAP program at Florida State University, organizing case studies as well as sessions for students focused on career development and advice, personal branding, soft-skills, etc. In 2018, Dwayne was elected to the IABA Executive Board as Vice President.
Dwayne is a native of Toronto, ON and has earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, majoring in Actuarial Science from the University of Waterloo.  


Treasurer/Director - Kristin Johnson

Kristin is an Actuarial Associate at Brighthouse Financial. Prior to joining Brighthouse, she worked as an Analyst with Prudential and also worked in Risk Management for GE Capital. Kristin graduated from the South Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and continued her education at the North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University where she obtained a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics. Kristin has served as a Boot Camp Presenter and is on the Finance and Scholarship Committees for the International Association of Black Actuaries.

 



Secretary - Gloria Gilliam, ACAS, MAAA

Gloria is a Manager at Deloitte Consulting where she provides financial reporting and reserving services to P&C insurance companies and other companies with retained P&C risk. Prior to joining Deloitte Consulting, Gloria started her career at PwC after receiving a  M.A. in Mathematics from University of Pittsburgh and a B.S. in Mathematics & Economics from University of Delaware.  Gloria became involved with IABA in 2010 after graduate school and served as the leader of the Volunteer Coordination Committee from 2015-2018 before transitioning to her role as Secretary in January 2019.  In addition to her work with IABA, Gloria serves on the board of the Casualty Actuaries of the MidAtlantic Region (CAMAR) as past-president.  
  

 

Student Liaison - Ama Kissiwaa Ampadu-Kissi, ASA

Ama currently works as a Senior Actuarial Associate at Venerable Annuity in West Chester, PA. She supports the Investment Analytics team at Venerable. Prior to joining Venerable, she worked as an Investment Analyst at Prudential, where she supported the Global Portfolio Management Team. She is an Associate Actuary and has a Master’s degree in Actuarial Science from Illinois State University, and a Bachelors in Mathematics with Computer Science from the University of Ghana. She is a previous IABA Scholarship recipient and a past Boot Camp participant. She also currently volunteers as a student mentor and took lead on one of IABA’s Research Initiatives.search Initiatives.

 


Director - Stephen Abrokwah, Ph.D., FSA, CERA, MAAA

Stephen is a Vice President, Actuary & Client Manager at Swiss Re. At Swiss Re, Stephen is responsible for building business relationships, driving and delivering strategy with US based L&H insurance carriers.  Stephen has extensive experience in the financial services industry, spanning audit consulting, direct insurance and reinsurance, with international experience, and started out his career with PwC in Ghana, where he served clients in the West-African sub-region. Stephen holds a doctorate degree in Applied Economics and currently has a total of 7 academic and industry focused peer-reviewed research publications. He's a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, a Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst, and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries. He started volunteering with IABA in 2012 as the deputy chair of the newsletter committee and later on, joined the Board of Directors in 2017.

 

Director - Alan Newsome, FSA, MAAA

Alan is an AVP & Sr. Actuary Manager in Investment Management at Venerable in West Chester, PA.  His specialties include investments, asset modeling, ALM, hedging strategy and operations, and liquidity and credit analytics.  Prior to joining Venerable, Alan served as AVP in Corporate ALM at Voya, Director of Hedging at John Hancock, and as a Sr. Actuarial Software Analyst at Willis Towers Watson (formerly Towers Watson).  Alan is a graduate and trustee of Lebanon Valley College, and earned is FSA in 2012.  He has been a member of IABA since 2010 and on the Board of Directors since 2018. Alan lives in Bryn Mawr, PA with his wife and two children.

Director - Monique Hacker-Patterson, FSA, MAAA 

Monique is a Corporate Vice President & Actuary at New York Life Insurance Company in Tampa, FL. She continues to serve on the Board of IABA since being elected in January, 2013. Monique also served in the Vice President role and chaired the Annual Meeting Planning Committee from 2010 - 2012. Monique has been a member of IABA since 2009. After moving from Jamaica, Monique graduated from Binghamton University in 2000 with a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics and Economics.

 

  

 

Director - Ugo Okpewho, FSA, MAAA

Ugo is a Director in the Insurance Advisory division at BDO.  There, he functions as the healthcare advisory leader serving a variety of clients in the audit and transaction space.  Prior, he was a VP & Actuary at Aon Risk Solutions leading employer-related actuarial engagements performing duties such as budget projections, contribution analyses, population health management and various client-specific healthcare modeling scenarios.  Prior to Aon, he was employed at Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance carriers in various actuarial health pricing, reserving, forecasting and financial roles. He was also employed at a national Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) as the Chief Actuary performing Medicare bid pricing and forecasting. Earlier in his career, he worked at a Big 4 global accounting firm as a health consulting actuarial analyst performing employer renewals, reserving and actuarial research and publications.  
Ugo has been in the healthcare actuarial field since 2003.
Ugo moved to the USA from Nigeria and earned his bachelor’s degree in Financial Analysis/Math from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA).


Executive Director - Kate Weaver

Kate brings over 15 years of project management and marketing experience to IABA. Kate graduated with a double major in Marketing and Management from Fairfield University in Connecticut. Upon exiting a career in Sports Marketing and Event Management, Kate returned to school to receive her Master's in Education. She taught Marketing and Career Training in Connecticut public high schools for 5 years. She has been assisting  IABA in outreach, education and development initiatives since 2009.
