Announcement of Election Results!

 

President/Director - Tenesia McGruder, FSA, MAAA

Tenesia is an Actuary at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama. She has had several roles prior to joining Blue Cross including Actuarial Consultant at Optum, Actuarial Analyst at Anthem, and Pension Consultant at Towers Watson. Tenesia graduated from the Georgia State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Actuarial Science and she received her Fellowship designation in 2014. Tenesia has served as Foundation President, Atlanta Affiliate Leader, Student Liaison, Scholarship Chair, and on the Annual Meeting Planning Committee of the International Association of Black Actuaries. She is an avid traveler and has been to all seven continents.

  

 

 

Vice President/Director - Jamala Arland, FSA, MAAA

Jamala is Vice President and Actuary for Long Term Care Inforce Management at Genworth Financial. She has had prior roles at Genworth in life valuation and annuity pricing. Prior to joining Genworth, she worked at Ernst & Young LLP in New York, NY. Jamala was born and raised in Barbados, and graduated from the University of Waterloo in 2003 with a Bachelor of Mathematics in Actuarial Science and Statistics. She got her Fellowship designation in 2008. Jamala has served as Treasurer, Secretary, Mentoring Chair, and on the Annual Meeting Planning Committee of the International Association of Black Actuaries. She is also a member of the Society of Actuaries’ Long Term Care Council and the American Academy of Actuaries’ Long Term Care Reform Subcommittee. Jamala enjoys playing tennis. 

 

  

Treasurer/Director - Kristin Johnson

Kristin is an Actuarial Associate at Brighthouse Financial. Prior to joining Brighthouse, she worked as an Analyst with Prudential and also worked in Risk Management for GE Capital. Kristin graduated from the South Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and continued her education at the North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University where she obtained a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics. Kristin has served as a Boot Camp Presenter and is on the Finance and Scholarship Committees for the International Association of Black Actuaries.

 

 

 

Secretary - Kwame Davis, FCAS, MAAA

Kwame is a consulting actuary with Willis Towers Watson. He hails from Trinidad and Tobago and moved to the US in 2001. He is a Howard University alum of class 2005 and serves on the board for the center for insurance education. He is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society. He currently serves as co-chair for the DC affiliate for the last few years. He also currently serves on the joint committee on encouragement of actuarial diversity, CAS diversity and webinar committees. He has also been a champion of Diversity initiatives at his employer, Willis Towers Watson involved with recruiting and various inclusion initiatives. 


 

 

Student Liaison - Paulus Ackah

Paulus was born in Ghana and moved to the United States in 2012. He is a first generation senior at Georgia State University and serves on the Board of Directors for the Student Alumni Association. He is also a 2016 recipient of the IABA Scholarship. Before receiving the scholarship, he was a member of the 2015 IABA Boot Camp class. Paulus is passionate about motivating people and helping them to reach their goals. Last year, he was an intern at Prudential Financial. Currently, he is an intern at Lincoln Financial Group.

 

 

 

 

Director - Stephen Abrokwah, Ph.D., ASA, CERA, MAAA

Stephen is an Assistant Vice President and Marketing Actuary at Swiss Re and has been with the company since 2013. Stephen serves as the primary point of contact for quoting, treaty and mortality consulting work for his clients, and has also been a part of the Swiss Re team focused on the middle market strategy, predictive analytics, and assisting clients with innovative ways of closing the mortality protection gap. Prior to Swiss Re, Stephen worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers within the Audit and Assurance line of business, specializing in the audit of companies within the financial services as well as the energy and mining industries across the West African sub region. Stephen holds a Doctorate degree in Economics with fields of specialization including International Economics, Development Economics, and Econometrics. He also holds the ASA and CERA actuarial credentials and is a member of the American Academy of Actuaries. His research publications range from issues pertaining to Social Health insurance to Accelerated Underwriting
and Predictive Analytics in life insurance.

 

 

Director - Eric Atwater, FSA, MAAA

Eric is a Partner and leader of Aon’s Public Sector Actuarial practice. His primary responsibility is increasing Aon’s market presence as best-in-class provider of actuarial consulting services and bundled solutions in the public sector.  He also serves as lead consulting actuary and relationship manager to public entities.  Eric has been involved with IABA since 1996, when he was a college student looking for an actuary mentor.  He helped write the content and designed IABA’s first website in the early 2000s.  Mr. Atwater has served in several capacities with IABA, including leading the Atlanta local affiliate and being a mentor. In addition to his IABA service, Eric has served on the Social Security Committee of the American Academy of Actuaries, Public Plans Committee of the Conference of Consulting Actuaries and is a member of the Pension Assistance List (PAL) that provides professional services to consumers who have questions about their pension plans.  Additionally, Eric serves as a mentor for the Year Up program and is a frequent speaker at programs targeted toward developing and mentoring youth.  Eric graduated with honors from Georgia State University, where he received a BBA with a concentration in Actuarial Science.

 

 

Director - Nicassia Belton 

Nicassia is the Associate Director of Precollege programs at the University of Maryland. She spearheaded the development and implementation of the first BSc program in Actuarial Science at a Historically Black Institution in 2008 and first IABA student-led affiliate in 2012. She has served on the Corporate Advisory Council and chaired the Education Committee for IABA since 2010. In 2012, she founded the IABA Boot Camp, now in its fourth year. Nicassia has been a Board member for IABA since 2013. Nicassia holds a MS in Mathematics with a specialization in Computational Finance from Purdue University, a BSc in Mathematics from Morgan State University and currently completing her doctoral degree in Mathematics Education.

 

 

Director - Monique Hacker-Patterson, FSA, MAAA 

Monique is a Corporate Vice President & Actuary at New York Life Insurance Company in Tampa, FL. She continues to serve on the Board of IABA since being elected in January, 2013. Monique also served in the Vice President role and chaired the Annual Meeting Planning Committee from 2010 - 2012. Monique has been a member of IABA since 2009. After moving from Jamaica, Monique graduated from Binghamton University in 2000 with a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics and Economics.

 

 

 

Director - Stafford L. Thompson, Jr.  FSA, MAAA

Stafford was born in Jefferson City, MO to Dr. Stafford L. and Mrs. Bessie L. Thompson, Sr. He was raised in Tallahassee, FL. He graduated valedictorian in 1991 from the Lanier Academic Motivational Program (LAMP) of Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, AL.  Stafford majored in Mathematics with a concentration in Actuarial Science at Florida A&M University. He graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1994 with a 4.0 GPA. While in college, he was initiated into the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., founded the FAMU Actuarial Club, joined the Golden Key Honor Society, and authored a professionalism course for actuaries. Stafford began his actuarial career in Hartford, CT at CIGNA Corporation where he advanced through 7 different roles in 9.5 years. He became a fully certified actuary in 2002 becoming one the youngest African-Americans to obtain this designation and one of the first 50 Black actuaries worldwide. Today, Stafford is the Vice President of Value-Added Solutions at SCOR Global Life Americas where he works with companies in Latin America to introduce new products to customers in Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Chile and Colombia. Stafford has been a tireless advocate for the advancement of Black people in corporate America. He has served on several diversity councils which led to CIGNA making MLK Day an official company holiday. He served as president of the International Association of Black Actuaries. During his tenure, he increased scholarships to future Black actuaries by 100 fold and connected the corporate and educational communities to increase professional awareness and support careers of Black actuaries. He has also mentored countless students and professionals. Stafford also treasures and nurtures his faith in both the African Methodist Episcopal Church where he has served as a steward and the AME ZION Church. He is married to Michelle Ann-Marie Thompson and they have a beautiful daughter Mikayla Simone Thompson.

 

 

Executive Director - Kate Weaver

Kate brings over 15 years of project management and marketing experience to IABA. Kate graduated with a double major in Marketing and Management from Fairfield University in Connecticut. Upon exiting a career in Sports Marketing and Event Management, Kate returned to school to receive her Master's in Education. She taught Marketing and Career Training in Connecticut public high schools for 5 years. She has been assisting  IABA in outreach, education and development initiatives since 2009.
